Made famous in Asia by the Ayurvedic and Chinese medical systems, the use of the Gota Kola plant has a history stemming back 2,000 years. Mentioned by the legendary Emperor Shennong in his famous plant manual Shénnóng Běn Cǎo Jīng and also many Ayurvedic texts, Gotu Kola has been exalted for giving the mind strength during such practices as meditation. Traditionalists have observed that Gotu Kola balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain so that concentration is heightened and stress lessened. In Sri Lanka it is said that elephants find this herb irresistible and from this observation the saying of “Two leaves a day keep old age away” came into being.
The Gotu Kola plant itself is a perennial that likes to creep in marshy wet soil in its native habitat of India. Sometimes growing to about 50cm in height, the fan shaped leaves with their frilled edges and whitish veins are sometimes compared to the look of the brain. This association led ancient people to conclude that this herb would be beneficial to the inner workings of the mind.
